[NSFW] Unsettling photos with back stories. | No Sleep

 A lot of pictures out in the world are creepy. Some are bizarre. Especially if you know the backstories to them.
Note: if you are faint of heart, or have difficulty going to sleep after watching gore, don’t read this.

1. The War Photo No One Would Publish

 The Iraqi soldier died attempting to pull himself up over the dashboard of his truck. The flames engulfed his vehicle and incinerated his body, turning him to dusty ash and blackened bone. In a photograph taken soon afterward, the soldier’s hand reaches out of the shattered windshield, which frames his face and chest. The colors and textures of his hand and shoulders look like those of the scorched and rusted metal around him. Fire has destroyed most of his features, leaving behind a skeletal face, fixed in a final rictus. He stares without eyes. You can still see the grimace on his face.

 2.  Nuclear Shadow

After Hiroshima, there were shadow outlines of people who had been alive, but had died and disintegrated instantly in the blast.

3. Omagh Bombing

The red car beside them was a car bomb that went off shortly after this picture was taken. The photographer died but the main subjects of the photo (man and the child) survived. A total of 29 people died in the blast.\

"The chilling photograph on  was found by investigators in a camera buried in the rubble. It is surely one of the most poignant images of the whole event. The picture was taken in the minutes before the bomb exploded, clearly showing the red car - with its deadly hidden cargo - beside dozens of oblivious civilians.
Part of this crowd was made up of school children on a trip from Buncrana, county Donegal. The Irish children were hosting Spanish children on an exchange programme. The bomb was to claim the lives of four of these children, as well as a minder."  Source: wesleyjohnston.com

4. Last photo of  Regina Kay Walters

This picture of 14-year-old Regina Kay Walters was taken by serial killer Robert Ben Rhoades, who toured the country in an 18-wheeler equipped with a torture chamber in the back. This photo was taken in an abandoned Illinois barn, where Rhoades killed Walters after cutting off her hair and making her wear a black dress and heels.

5. James Bulger.

    The toddler in the photo is James Bulger.

    He is being led away from his mother by one of the two 10-year-old boys who abducted and would later murder him.

Here’s a paragraph from Wikipedia; At the trial it was established that at this location, one of the boys threw blue Humbrol modelling paint, which they had shoplifted earlier, into Bulger’s left eye. They kicked and stomped on him, and threw bricks and stones at him. Batteries were placed in Bulger’s mouth. Police believed some batteries may have been inserted into his anus, although none were found there.
Finally, a 22-pound (10.0 kg) iron bar, described in court as a railway fish plate, was dropped on him. Bulger suffered ten skull fractures as a result of the iron bar striking his head. Dr. Alan Williams, the case’s pathologist, stated that Bulger suffered so many injuries — 42 in total — that none could be isolated as the fatal blow.

6. R Budd Dwyer seconds before he shot himself on TV at a press conference.

On the morning of Jan. 22, 1987, the media gathered for what they thought was a news conference to hear the resignation of R. Budd Dwyer. Known as an "honest man," Dwyer had recently been convicted of taking bribes during his time as the Treasurer of Pennsylvania. As Dwyer began his speech, what unfolded over the next few minutes left a scare that is still visible 28 years later.

7. A photographer in China in 2013 accidentally captured the moment of a person jumping from a bridge to his death.

This is the moment a newspaper photographer trying to take a snap of heavy fog that had blanketed a bridge captured a couple’s suicide leap.

The photographer had been standing on a viewing platform ready to take a snap of the fog shrouded bridge across the Wuhan Yangtze River in Wuhan, at Hubei province in central China.
Police identified the man from some of the possessions he left at the top and said he was a 20-year-old migrant worker named as Liu Han

‘To be honest I didn’t even see the first person jump because I was concentrating so much on the camera settings and I didn’t realise at first that I had snapped the man jumping to his death.

8. John Lennon giving autograph to his killer

9.   Last thing the politician saw was his killers.

THIS is the dramatic moment an assassin is caught on camera – by the politician he shoots dead.

The victim took what he thought would be a happy New Year’s Eve snap of his family a split-second before his killer pulled the trigger.

The gunman was lurking in the background as Reynaldo Dagsa, 35, lined up his wife Arlene, daughter and mother-in-law outside his home.

Mr Dagsa was shot in the chest in Philippines capital Manila, where he was a law-enforcing councillor who had helped get his killer Michael Gonzales jailed for car theft.

A police source said: “This is probably the first time in history that a victim has managed to capture his own murder on film.

“We were led straight to the killer because of the picture. It’s fair to say he is a familiar face to us.”

Gonzales was arrested with an accomplice, top right of the photo, who kept lookout.

10. Columbine 1999 Class Picture.

On April 20, 1999, two teens went on a shooting spree at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, killing 13 people and wounding more than 20 others before turning their guns on themselves and committing suicide. The crime was the worst high school shooting in U.S. history and prompted a national debate on gun control and school safety, as well as a major investigation to determine what motivated the gunmen, Eric Harris, 18, and Dylan Klebold, 17.
